OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD
WHO REIGNS FROM HEAVEN ABOVE.
WITH WISDOM, POWER AND MIGHT,
OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!

Too often, preachers on the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
try to explain the mystery of the Trinity in their preaching.
Even Jesus never tried to explain the Trinity.
Today, we gather not to gain understanding of the Trinity,
but simply to rejoice in its mystery,
to revel with delight in who God is,
to gather to celebrate the mystery of our God,
who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
to celebrate, not what we understand,
but to stand beneath the mystery of our God,
three persons in one God,
in whom we believe,
and in whom we are saved.

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!

Today the book of Proverbs speaks of the wisdom of God,
the Spirit who existed before creation,
who hovered over the waters of creation,
who was with God before the Big Bang,
before creation came to be.
Our God is an awesome God!
The psalmist invites us to rejoice in that God
and to cry out
“O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!”

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!

St. Paul reminds the Romans and us
that we have peace through our Lord Jesus Christ,
that we boast in hope of the glory of God,
that the love of God has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit
that we have been richly blessed by this triune God.

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!

In the final discourse at the Last Supper,
Jesus tells those gathered,
that he has much more to tell them,
but that they could not bear it at that time.
He goes on to tell them that the Spirit,
who comes from God,
will guide them to all truth.
And that Spirit has guided us to this truth,
to the One in whose name we have been baptized,
to the One in whose name we sign ourselves
each time we gather around the table of Lord,
to the One in whose name we impart blessings
and in whose name we receive blessings.

And today,
on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity,
we do not seek to understand this mystery,
we seek only to delight in the One who is this mystery,
the One in whom we live and breathe, and have our being,
the One who calls us out of darkness and into this marvelous light,
the One who created us, saved us, and promises us everlasting life,
the One who feeds us with Word and Sacrament,
the One who is with us in good times and in bad,
who strengthen us, nourishes us, bestows mercy upon us,
the One who gives us faith, loves us with a love beyond all telling,
and is our hope in times of despair,
the One who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!

Forty years ago today,
our God chose, anointed and blessed Joe Deardorff, Dave Kelly and me
with ordination to the priesthood.
Like Mary, I cry out today,
“God who is mighty has done great things for me.”
Though certainly unworthy of the blessings that have come my way,
I rejoice in the One who has blessed me over and over again
throughout these years of ministry.
Even now, as I await the healing hand of God
to send me back into full-time ministry,
I invite you to rejoice with me in God my Savior,
who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD
WHO REIGNS FROM HEAVEN ABOVE.
WITH WISDOM, POWER AND MIGHT,
OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!
